Oil/Gas Thermal Oil Boilers

Core Working Principle

The core working principle of a thermal oil boiler is: Using high-temperature thermal oil as the heat transfer medium, a forced circulation pump delivers thermal energy to the heat-consuming equipment, after which it returns to the boiler for reheating, forming a closed, stable liquid-phase (circulating heating system).

The most important feature of this closed-loop system is that the medium (thermal oil) only undergoes temperature changes during the cycle, while its physical state (liquid) remains unchanged, enabling stable high-temperature, low-pressure heat supply.

Main Features and Advantages

Thermal oil boilers are widely used in industrial fields because they possess unique advantages that steam and hot water boilers can hardly match:

  1. High Temperature & Low Pressure, Safe Operation

    • Core Advantage: The boiling point of thermal oil is much higher than that of water. For example, the boiling point of biphenyl mixed thermal oil can reach 257°C under atmospheric pressure, and the maximum use temperature can reach 400°C. This means a high-temperature heat source above 300°C can be obtained under atmospheric or relatively low pressure.

    • Comparison: To obtain 300°C steam, the boiler pressure needs to be as high as 8-9 MPa (about 90 atmospheres), which belongs to high-pressure vessels and is extremely dangerous. The system pressure of thermal oil boilers is usually below 1.0 MPa, making them much safer.

  2. Good Thermal Stability, Uniform Heat Transfer

    • High-quality thermal oil can maintain stable chemical properties within the allowed temperature range, providing a continuous and stable heating temperature. This is crucial for industrial processes requiring precise temperature control (e.g., chemical, textile, food), effectively improving product quality.

  3. Energy Saving & High Efficiency, Low Operating Costs

    • Liquid Phase Circulation, No Condensate Heat Loss: The entire system is a closed liquid phase cycle. There is no heat loss caused by condensate water and flash steam like in steam boilers, resulting in high thermal energy utilization.

    • No Water Treatment System Needed: The system uses thermal oil, so there's no need for expensive water softening and condensate recovery systems like steam boilers require, saving initial investment and daily operating costs (e.g., water treatment chemicals, waste heat from boiler blowdown).

  4. Easy Operation, Precise Temperature Control

    • Modern oil/gas thermal oil boilers use fully automatic intelligent control systems, enabling precise temperature control (±1°C), automatic ignition, flame-out protection, over-temperature and over-pressure alarm interlock functions. They are easy to operate and can achieve unattended operation.

  5. Wide Application, Strong Flexibility

    • Due to its high-temperature characteristics, it is widely used in industrial occasions that require high temperature but cannot withstand high pressure.

Main Application Scenarios

Oil/gas thermal oil boilers are the "heart" of many industrial sectors. Typical applications include:

  • Chemical Industry: Reactor heating, polymerization, concentration, distillation, drying.

  • Petroleum & Petrochemicals: Pipeline tracing, crude oil heating, asphalt heat retention.

  • Textile & Dyeing: Heating for heat setting machines, dryers, dyeing machines.

  • Plastics & Rubber: Heating for calenders, vulcanizers, internal mixers.

  • Building Materials: Cement curing, gypsum board drying, asphalt concrete heat retention.

  • Food Processing: Food drying, oven heating, edible oil processing.

  • Coating Industry: Drying and curing of paints and coatings.

Precautions

  1. Thermal Oil Selection & Degradation: Thermal oil will slowly oxidize and crack at high temperatures, leading to performance degradation (coking, increased viscosity). It is necessary to select the appropriate type of oil and strictly control the outlet oil temperature not to exceed its maximum allowable use temperature.

  2. System Cleaning: Regularly inspect and clean coke and carbon deposits inside the system. Otherwise, heat transfer efficiency will be affected, potentially causing overheating accidents.

  3. Leak Prevention & Fire Safety: Most thermal oils are combustible. The system must have leak prevention measures, and the installation site must be equipped with firefighting facilities.

  4. Initial Dehydration: New oil or systems after maintenance contain moisture. The dehydration operation must be performed following operating procedures to prevent the "oil spraying" accident caused by rapid vaporization of water.

Summary

Oil/Gas Thermal Oil Boilers are highly efficient industrial equipment that achieves high-temperature and low-pressure heat supply through forced circulation of high-temperature thermal oil. Their characteristics of high temperature & low pressure, stability & precision, and energy efficiency make them an irreplaceable heat source equipment in many industrial processes such as chemical, textile, and building materials.

When choosing, if you need a high-temperature heat source exceeding 100°C, especially for industrial production processes, then a thermal oil boiler is your ideal choice. If your needs are heating or domestic hot water (<90°C), then a vacuum hot water boiler may have more advantages in terms of safety and comprehensive cost.
